We celebrated the 30 years of service to our parish by Fred and Helen Haywood. Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a memorable evening. There were numerous speeches and thanks from parishioners. Chris Brennan gave an excellent summary of Fred and Helen’s work with the SVP and other parish outreaches. Both Helen and Fred spoke with gratitude to the parish for the initial welcome they received when arriving from the South not knowing anyone and how important that initial knock on the door by two parishioners to say “welcome” was. A special thank you to Miss Haggart – the Head at St. Joseph’s – for making us so welcome and thanks to the Caretaker, Alan, for being so helpful. Our parish social committee showed what we are capable of when it comes to the big events. Thank you to them for the hard work they put into this marvellous evening. Our parish council meeting on Tuesday was updated by the different groups in our parish. Buildings and grounds maintenance is a constant. Expenditures also needing regular scrutiny. The minutes of the meeting will be available soon and there will be an overview announcement at all Masses next weekend. Katie Flood’s imminent departure and possible successor was an important separate item. Again, our thanks to members of the Council for their commitment. A special Mass for the Feast of St. Francis will be celebrated next Tuesday at St. Godric’s. Brothers Paul and John welcome all. On behalf of the Parish of the Durham Martyrs, can I wish them a happy feast day and a 'thank you' for bringing the charism of Francis to our parish and beyond. A request has come for volunteers to clean at St. Godric’s Church. Please let me know if you have time to join a parish team of cleaners. Thanks.

And so, it has come to pass, the Queen has died. A truly sad day for more than just the nation. She has been a presence in the lives of so many for so long. As a parish, we welcome all who might like to spend a moment in prayerful thanksgiving for her life during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament this Sunday, between 3 and 4pm at St. Godric’s. All are welcome. Welcome back to all our schools. A special welcome for Mrs. Bridon, who is the new Headteacher at St. Godric’s. Eucharistic Services return on Mondays to St. Godric’s School, commencing Monday, 19th September

Its good to be back. What was most enjoyable with a Summer holiday was the opportunity to meet friends again after such a long time due to the pandemic. Many thanks to Brothers John and Paul for helping. Thanks also to Fr. Seamus O’Kane whom, I gather, brought you on a journey down memory lane. Memory reminds me of Mary Hughes, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday recently. A great lady, a great parishioner. We seem to be moving in the right direction regarding opening up. Slowly but surely. Some still seem uncertain about venturing into gatherings. That’s understandable but I hope that the need for meeting people on a physical level is not being replaced. It can’t.
