A big weekend for the Eucharist. Besides our own Mass attendance, we have the second of our First Holy Communion Celebrations this Saturday at St. Godric’s. Last Saturday saw St. Joseph’s and St. Thomas More schools’ children receive for the first time. The gathering was lower key than in the past and this made for a more powerful celebration. It was very special, which I have no doubt this Saturday will be too. Again, a big thank you to all who made it so. As it’s the Feast of Corpus Christi this weekend, can I invite all Ministers of the Eucharist to renew their commitment at all Masses. A special thank you to you for your great support. Ushaw College hosts the conclusion to the Year of the Eucharist, which I am sure many of you have booked in for. “Only when we recognise the rich network of connections between the Eucharist and our life in the world can the Eucharist be ‘worldly’ and our life ‘Eucharistic’ Henri Nouwen

“Our sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ has no other purpose than to transform us into that which we receive.”Pope Leothe Great. If this year was the Year of the Eucharist, then June is certainly the month of the Eucharist. It’s the high point of our parish with First Holy Communions over the next couple of Saturdays. Covid has denied children this opportunity, and so these Saturdays have an extra importance. The Feast of Corpus Christi also affords an opportunity for Eucharistic Ministers to renew their commitments. A special thank you to them for their invaluable contribution to parish life, especially in the bringing of the Eucharist to the sick. Thank you so much. It was wonderful to be present last Sunday in the aptly named Jubilee Room for the SVP celebrations of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was the first major gathering in the parish since lockdown and the relief at being able to meet again was tangible. Many thanks to all who put such great efforts in bringing such joy to so many. “The thing the church need most today is the ability to heal wounds and warm the hearts of the faithful.” Pope Francis.

As we move back to normality can I make a request of our choirs for more singers and musicians at our two Sunday Masses, especially singers. We are very fortunate to have the talents of Matthew, Paul and Roger. More singers in our respective weekend choirs are always welcome. Do join. Thanks.
Sadly, Richard Harrison joined the list of long-serving parishioners to leave us this week. Richard and wife Rita were received into the Church 20 years ago and Richard became very involved with the Knights of St. Columba especially. Our sympathies to Rita and family.
I attended a special ceremony in Newcastle this week when the family of legendary footballer Jack Charlton were presented with a special award from the Irish Government. It can’t be over-estimated how important a lad from a mining background in the North-East of England played in the development of modern Ireland. Jack’s importance, which transcends soccer, was highlighted in a speech by the Irish Ambassador to the UK, Adrian O’Neill. The Ambassador also visited the Centre for Catholic Studies here in Durham, where one of the main topics of discussion was ‘Reconciliation in Society’, and the contribution the Centre might make towards it. Exciting times.
