We journey into the new year with some degree of optimism that Covid won’t destabilise as last year. Caution is still asked of us, especially in church. Please, do support our marvellous stewards by abiding by the very basic requirements. The one metre distance must be maintained and being seated at all times is most helpful. Please do not heed what other churches may be doing if a more relaxed approach is taken. We have a duty of care. Thank you. And speaking of thanks, can I use this opportunity to thank you all for your kindness to me over Christmas. The gifts, the cards, all deeply appreciated. As I was in Scotland for the wonderful wedding of Paddy Reilly-O’Donnell and Cecily Walker, I didn’t get the chance to wish you all a peaceful new year, so let’s pray that, above all, it will be moving to a post-Covid year.

This has been such a difficult year for many. Your support has been deeply appreciated. Even now our way forward is uncertain and the message of Christmas needed all the more. Hope in darkness. The year has also given exceptional examples of self-sacrifice and kindness. I see it in our schools, our hospitals, our care homes and in our parish. A ‘thank you’ again to our church stewards. In all of this uncertainty, can I thank you for your support for me and wish you all a very peaceful Christmas. Please stay safe and don’t take unnecessary risks.

This Friday at St. Leonard’s saw the new entrance and a memorial to the late Austin Flynn. It was dedicated in thanksgiving to Austin’s memory.
I’m sure you are as frustrated as I am over the possibility of new restrictions to cope with the Covid variant. We constantly feel we’ve turned a corner on the road back to ‘normality’, when suddenly we’re pitched into a new battle of coping with another variant. This constant readjustment to new restrictions can be very wearing, especially on our mental stability. Perhaps we need reminding of those words from the children’s classic by Christopher Robin “promise me you’ll always remember: you’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Hang in there, we will get there, and Christmas will give us what it’s meant to give…hope!
