New variants, new restrictions – our patience is being stretched. However, we might have to keep to the forefront of our minds the fantastic strides we have already made. It would seem Christmas will have a familiarity this year akin to last year. As you know, the Covid landscape is changing almost daily. This can create a mental challenge for so many. Relationships can be strained. Hang in there. In the words of the English Medieval Anchorite ‘All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things will be well.’ Julian lived through the Black Plague – in solitude – which may well have saved her life in a high-risk part of England. And, she survived not just one, two or three, but four outbreaks of the plague … and no vaccines. Ultimately, the writings of Mother Julian of Norwich are seen as gems of wisdom, and optimism - very relevant to us today. By trying to keep you safe with the restrictions in both churches, can I ask you to please continue to think of others at all times. Wear face masks, socially distance, sanitise hands and exit immediately at the end of Mass. You may not think all this is really necessary, but everyone else does. Initiating chats inside the church building can impose on others in a way that they feel too uncomfortable to mention. Thanks again for all your support

Welcome Brother Paul to the Parish. Capuchin Friar, Bro Paul arrived ahead of the rest of his Community on Thursday to take up residence in Tenter House. We look forward to the Spirit of St. Francis coming to the North-East for the first time since the Middle Ages. Brother Paul is preparing the way for the rest of the Community, who should be with us early in the New Year. Covid restrictions are being lifted ever so gently soon. Whilst we all look forward to this, need I tell you that we are not out of the woods yet!!! Please continue your tremendous support by being vigilant, and responsible. Masks are an essential part of that vigilance, as are hand sanitising and social distancing. We still witness dreadful irresponsible behaviour around us in other parts of society where people gather. I continually hear visitors say how shocked they are at the disregard for protective measures in supermarkets etc. The Diocese has an excellent record of being Covid free in all churches. Let’s keep it so. Thank you.

A time to remember. I watched ‘Conversations’ with former soldiers of WW1 on BBC4 television. Extremely moving. The sense of guilt and loss was transparent. The saddest account was from one ex-serviceman, who said that he thought they (the soldiers) were heading to France ‘for a bit of fun’. He added that this perception changed very quickly once they had arrived in the war zone. Our sympathies to Matthew Grehan-Bradley on the death of his mother, Anne, who died on Thursday. May she rest in peace. Our Parish Council meeting this week was, as you can imagine, focussed on the upcoming Youth Programmes, Covid, and what contribution we might make to Lumiére. Any volunteers around for Lumiére would be very welcome. We’re trying to feature St. Godric’s in all its luminous glory to all visitors – even though we’re not on the official path of the various exhibits.
