The Climate Conference in Glasgow continues to present a sign of hope. Pope Francis in his Thought for the Day on BBC Radio 4 last Saturday, was cautious in his 3-minute slot. He said we all have our own individual responsibility in facing the challenges of climate crisis. How can we respond as parish? Covid continues to lurk around every corner, as if to say, ”I’m still here….”. Our schools can give testimony to that reality. However, life must go on. The responsibility on our stewards to ensure your safety has been very great. As we ease off with restrictions, and possible need for stewarding in church, dare I ask that we all exercise personal responsibility in keeping each other safe? So far, everyone has been great. But we can easily let our guard down. We all desperately want to catch up with chats after Mass etc., both inside and in the entrances to our churches. Please do not. This can impose an unfair burden on the many who feel distancing is still needed but may not wish to offend by saying so.

Last Sunday’s Treasure Hunt at St. Godric’s was a great success. All age groups attended and it was particularly delightful to see young families enjoying the hunt which ended in a coffee and biscuit back at the church. It was also important to have the support and highlighting of St. Godric’s profile. So, many thanks to all who joined us on the first of many such ventures in our efforts to bring both parish and St. Godric’s back to post-pandemic life.
Breda Gallagher departs this weekend from the parish to live in Selby near to her daughter, Clare. We will miss Breda very much. She has been a great servant of the parish, and a friend to many. She was involved in various groups, be it the Teams of Our Lady, the SVP, Parish Bereavement Group, and Wednesday prayer group, which she hosted for many years, and of which I was fortunate enough to be a part, and to receive that matriarchal hospitality. Perhaps nothing gave Breda more joy than to bring the Eucharist to the sick. Our prayers and best wishes Breda.
November is a precious month of the year when we simply give thanks for the lives of our departed loved ones. All Souls Day this year will have greater poignancy for us because of the devastation of Covid. You are all invited to join me at either one (or both) of the two Masses in the parish on Tuesday. No booking required. “Remembrance is a personal, therefore subjective, process. It matters all the more to nurture it collectively.” Eric Varden
We are, unfortunately, an ageing community, and do need younger parishioners to become Ministers of the Eucharist. A special appeal has been made for more volunteers to bring Holy Communion to the sick. Please do consider this marvellous ministry and let me know if you can assist. Thanks. Finally, we need help to clear the falling leaves, which can be a slip hazard during rainy days. In the past, Tony Twomey always organised this and now there is nobody. The sweeping brushes seem to have disappeared too. If you could help, please let me know.

As you can gather, Covid cases continue to rise to a worrying degree nationwide. Whilst we long to get the parish back to normality, the risks of breaching appropriate social distancing are more and more present. Please be ultra careful in your hand sanitising and mask wearing. We had a great turnout for the Confirmation Programme meeting. Great to see this enthusiasm in our young people. Synod, Year of the Eucharist are all upon us now. A challenge to our parish
