The last of the First Communions is this weekend. Many thanks to our dedicated catechists for their tireless work preparing the children. Again, no need to remind you of our slow return to normality. Covid is also reminding us on a daily basis that it’s still around, particularly in the Durham area.

The governing body of the Federation of St. Thomas More and St. Joseph’s met for the last time on Thursday evening before the schools separate into two individual governing bodies. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their dedication to the service of Catholic education. We have been blessed by the quiet way that governors go about quietly serving the needs of children and staff. This service is, and has been, the bulwark of the high standards that Catholic schools have always successfully aspired to. We move forward now into the relatively new format of Academies. This will be a very new challenge to the role of governor, which I am confident will be met with the same dedication. “Catholic schools carry out a great mission, to serve God by building knowledge and character… By teaching the Word of God you help your students to follow a path of virtue.” George W. Bush. We conclude our First Communions over these next two weekends. Thanks again to our schools and catechists for their support, especially in these trying circumstances of restrictions. Thanks also to Frs. Andy Downie and Paul Douthwaite for their help in ensuring that all children receive the Eucharist for the first time. “Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love in this life: the Blessed Sacrament. There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity and the true way of your loves upon the earth.” JR Tolkien, writer of The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings.

Returning to church has been a real blessing for all of us and slowly we take tentative steps towards getting back to some normality. For many of us it’s the opportunity to sit in silence for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, or just immerse ourselves in the quiet reflection in church before Mass. I think the soul desperately needs the solitude that church affords us.
To be with others who have that same need is also very supportive.
“Let silence take you to the core of life.” Rumi.
We continue with our First Communions this weekend. Different settings than before, but so so powerful. We keep all our First Communicants in our prayers.
